SS400 is one of the most widely used carbon structural steels in the Asian market. The grade name indicates a minimum tensile strength of 400 MPa. With good weldability, moderate strength, and excellent formability, SS400 is commonly chosen for general structural and engineering applications.
Chemically, SS400 contains low carbon (typically 0.05–0.25%), small amounts of manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur. The low carbon content ensures good ductility and makes the steel easier to weld, cut, and bend. SS400 does not rely on alloying elements, which helps maintain low production and procurement costs.
SS400 is supplied mainly in hot-rolled condition. Hot-rolled steel offers good mechanical performance for structural components. Some applications may also request pickled & oiled surfaces to improve appearance and corrosion resistance during transportation.
In terms of application, SS400 is widely used in construction structures, bridges, machinery frames, vehicle components, and general welded parts. It is commonly produced in plates, coils, H-beams, angles, channels, and flat bars. Its comprehensive performance and affordability make SS400 a highly reliable option for large-scale construction and industrial projects.
