ASTM A537 Class 1 Normalized Carbon-Manganese Pressure Vessel Steel

ASTM A537 Class 1 Normalized Carbon-Manganese Pressure Vessel Steel

ASTM A537 Class 1 is normalized heat-treated carbon-manganese silicon steel specified by ASTM A537/A537M, developed for medium-strength pressure vessels requiring balanced toughness and fabrication performance. Distinct from quenched & tempered Class 2, its delivery state is full normalization, delivering uniform grain structure and stable mechanical performance for medium-thickness plates within 100mm maximum thickness.

Controlled carbon, manganese and silicon alloying optimizes tensile and yield strength. Under standard test conditions, its tensile strength ranges 485–620 MPa with minimum yield strength 315 MPa for plates under 65mm. Strict limitation on sulfur and phosphorus ensures excellent ductility and Charpy impact property, which can be supplemented with low-temperature impact test as customer’s optional requirement.

The normalized base material features superior formability and stable welding performance, eliminating complicated post-weld heat treatment for thin-medium thickness structures. Main applications cover general industrial boilers, oil storage tanks, gas separators and municipal pressure equipment. It is an economical alternative to high-strength quenched-tempered steel for non-extreme pressure projects. We provide full-size A537 Class 1 plates with third-party inspection reports for global engineering bids in MENA, Latin America and Southeast Asia markets.
