ASTM A516 Grade 70 Carbon Steel Plate for Pressure Vessels

 

ASTM A516 Grade 70 is the most widely used PVQ (Pressure Vessel Quality) carbon steel plate under ASTM A516 standard, designed for low and moderate temperature welded pressure equipment. It belongs to carbon-manganese killed steel with strictly controlled impurity elements to guarantee stable notch toughness, a core material for global oil, gas and chemical storage facilities.

Its chemical composition adopts low-carbon design with C max 0.31%, Mn 0.85–1.20%, limited P and S to minimize internal defects. Standard mechanical properties include tensile strength 485–620 MPa, minimum yield strength 260 MPa, and elongation over 21%. Plates thicker than 40mm must be normalized to upgrade low-temperature impact resistance, meeting -29℃ Charpy V-notch impact requirements for cold-region tank projects.

A516 Gr70 boasts outstanding weldability with low carbon equivalent, compatible with all common welding processes without severe cold cracking risk. It is primarily applied to API 650 fixed roof tanks, floating roof tanks, boiler drums, heat exchangers and medium-pressure reactors.
