13CrMo44 steel: The tough choice for high-temperature and high-pressure working conditions

13CrMo44 is a kind of heat-resistant steel in the European standard (EN 10216-2) and belongs to the chromium-molybdenum alloy structural steel. Among them, "13" represents a carbon content of approximately 0.13%, "CrMo" indicates the presence of alloying elements such as chromium and molybdenum, and "44" is the serial number of this steel grade. Through alloying design with chromium and molybdenum elements, it features excellent high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance, and is suitable for pressure-bearing components operating in high-temperature and high-pressure environments.

This steel grade has prominent characteristics. It can maintain high strength and hardness even under high-temperature working conditions (such as 300-500℃), with a yield strength of approximately 290MPa and a tensile strength between 440-590MPa. Moreover, it has excellent creep resistance and can withstand alternating loads for a long time without deformation. The welding performance of 13CrMo44 steel is good. Through appropriate preheating before welding and post-welding heat treatment, the occurrence of welding cracks can be effectively avoided. At the same time, it has good processability and formability, and can meet the manufacturing requirements of various complex components.

In terms of chemical composition, the carbon content of 13CrMo44 steel is 0.10-0.16%, which ensures strength while taking toughness into account. The chromium content is 0.70-1.10% and the molybdenum content is 0.40-0.55%. The synergistic effect of the two can enhance the high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance of steel. The silicon content is 0.10-0.35%, which is used for deoxidation and improving the performance of steel. The manganese content is 0.40-0.70%, which plays a role in strengthening the matrix. The content of phosphorus and sulfur is controlled below 0.025% and 0.020% respectively to reduce the adverse effect of impurities on the thermal strength of steel.

13CrMo44 steel is mainly applied in high-temperature and high-pressure industrial piping systems, such as the main steam pipes in power plants and high-temperature superheater pipes, etc. In the petrochemical industry, it can be used to manufacture high-temperature pressure-bearing components such as ammonia synthesis equipment, reactors, and high-pressure heat exchangers. It can also be used in the boiler manufacturing industry to produce drums and headers that can withstand high temperatures and pressures. Its excellent thermal strength performance and reliability make it an indispensable structural material for high-temperature equipment in the energy and chemical industries.
