How to Verify the Authenticity of the Material Quality Certificate for S355J2WP Weathering Steel

Fake mill certificates are a real problem in the steel trade. Poor-quality material with forged documents sometimes ends up on critical projects, and the costs—structural, financial, and legal—can be severe. For S355J2WP weathering steel, a false certificate often means you're getting ordinary carbon steel with no corrosion resistance, no -20°C impact guarantee, and no traceability.

How do you spot the fakes?

1. Verify heat numbers with the issuing mill.

The most reliable method. Every legitimate mill certificate includes a heat number unique to that production batch. Contact the mill directly or use their online verification portal to confirm the heat exists and matches the documented tests. If the mill has no record of the heat, the certificate is forged.

2. Check certificate format and details.

Fake certificates often contain obvious formatting errors. Look for:

Gaps in the test result tables

Missing heat numbers or purchase order references

Typewriter-style fonts mixed with digital print

Typos in the mill name or standard designation

Certificate number sequences that don't follow the mill's pattern

3. Verify thickness-dependent yield strength.

A certificate showing 355 MPa yield for a 50mm plate is wrong. EN 10025-5 specifies lower yield for thicker sections. If the numbers don't align with the standard table, the certificate is either forged or incompetent.

4. Confirm impact testing at -20°C.

S355J2WP requires Charpy V-notch testing at -20°C. A certificate showing impact values at room temperature, 0°C, or missing impact data entirely is suspect. Some fake certificates omit impact values or show no test temperature. That's a red flag.

5. Check chemical limits.

Weathering steel requires copper (0.25–0.55%), chromium (0.40–0.80%), and nickel (≤0.65%). If the certificate shows no copper or copper below 0.25%, you're looking at ordinary carbon steel with a forged weathering steel label.

6. Verify the testing standard references.

Legitimate certificates reference EN ISO 6892-1 for tensile tests and EN ISO 148-1 for impact tests. If the standard references are missing, generic, or refer to non-applicable standards, be suspicious.

7. Demand a third-party inspection.

For critical projects, hire an independent inspection company to verify the material and certificate on-site. They'll take samples for independent testing and compare results with the certificate.

Cost of a fake. The extra cost of genuine S355J2WP from a reputable mill is small compared to the cost of corrosion failure on a building or bridge.
