How should rusting be treated on S355K2G2W weathering steel

Let’s clear this up right away: rust on S355K2G2W is not a defect. It’s the whole point.

But not all rust is created equal. There’s the good, protective kind—and the bad kind that eats through your steel. Knowing the difference saves you from unnecessary panic (or expensive repairs).

The good rust. In the first few months outdoors, the surface turns bright orange-brown. This is loose, temporary rust. Then, over 6 to 18 months, it slowly darkens into a dense, chocolate-brown patina. That patina is stable. It stops further corrosion. You can rub your hand across it without reddish powder coming off. That’s success.

The bad rust. If you see deep pitting, flaking layers, or bright red rust that never stops forming, something’s wrong. Common causes: trapped moisture (think overlapping surfaces or lack of drainage), constant salt spray without wet-dry cycles, or contact with dissimilar metals like copper or ordinary carbon steel.

How to handle problems.

New installation: Let it weather naturally. Don’t apply coatings, oils, or sealants. Do ensure water drains freely—drill weep holes, avoid horizontal ledges that trap water.

Uneven patina after a year: Accept it as character. Or accelerate uniformity by lightly misting with water weekly for a few months.

Bad rust appearing: Remove loose scale with a wire brush or light grinding. Then let the area re-weather. If the cause is a design flaw (like a water trap), fix that first.

Staining nearby surfaces (concrete, stone): Wash the runoff area promptly. Or install a drip edge or gravel strip to intercept rusty water before it hits light-colored materials.

What not to do. Never paint S355K2G2W unless absolutely required for a specific environment (like constant salt spray near an ocean). Paint traps moisture underneath and accelerates hidden corrosion. Also don’t pressure-wash aggressively—you’ll blast off the patina and restart the clock.
