ASTM Corten B steel is self-protecting,a hot rolled products of structural steels in technical delivery conditions with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance.Corten B steel is an economical, long-lasting and fully recyclable material.The rust layer on the surface becomes a tight oxide layer that slows down the progress of corrosion.

Corten B chemical composition mainly contains C (max 0.16%),Si (0.3-0.5%),Mn (0.8-1.25%),P(max 0.03),S(max 0.03%),Cr(0.4-0.65%).Ni (max 0.4%),Cu(0.25-0.4%),V (0.02-0.10).

According to the chemical details of Corten B, is made from adding common steel to a small amount of Cu, Cr, P elements and so on, then making some special process. Thus its corrosion resistance is about 3 to 8 times higher than the common steel. Besides, Cu, Ni element makes the steel possessing the properties,such as tenacity, ductility,shaping,welding,cutting,abrasion,fatigue resistance.

The material forms its own protective layer when exposed to atmospheric elements. Essentially, the top layer corrodes which then protects the steel beneath it. The natural finish does not normally require any form of maintenance such as painting, which makes the material a highly cost effective alternative to other structural steels.

Painting and maintenance will be required if the structure is is continually wet as a protective layer will not form. An good example is where the base of the structure meets with the ground or is partially submerged.
