S355K2G2W Weathering Steel Plate Delivery Conditions Explained

When you order S355K2G2W, the delivery condition isn't just paperwork. It affects grain structure, impact toughness, and how the plate performs in service. Here's what the options mean.

As-rolled (AR). The most common and economical condition. Plates are rolled and cooled naturally. Suitable for most applications up to 30mm thick. Fastest lead time and lowest cost. For thin and medium plates, as-rolled S355K2G2W meets all standard requirements.

Normalized (N). The plate is reheated to 880–920°C, held, then cooled in still air. This refines grain structure and improves toughness—especially for thick plates (over 40mm) or critical cold-service applications. Higher cost, longer lead time (+3–4 weeks).

Normalized-rolled (NR). Controlled rolling achieves grain refinement without a separate heat treatment. Properties similar to normalized, but faster and cheaper. Often specified for plates where normalized performance is needed but full heat treatment isn't practical.

Thermomechanically controlled processed (TMCP). Precise rolling temperatures and accelerated cooling produce fine grains and excellent toughness. Cost-effective compared to normalizing, with better weldability. Commonly specified for thick plates and bridge structures.

What to specify. State the condition on your purchase order: "S355K2G2W +AR" for as-rolled, "+N" for normalized, or "+TMCP" for controlled rolling. The mill certificate will confirm the delivery condition.

Common mistake. Assuming as-rolled always meets impact requirements. For thick plates, as-rolled Charpy values may drop near the minimum. Check the thickness-dependent requirements or specify normalized/TMCP for critical applications.
