Where S355J2WP works best
Where S355J2WP works best:
Atmospheric exposure: Rural, urban, and light-industrial—no persistent salt spray (stay 2+ km from coastlines)
Temperature range: Down to -20°C—handles most European and North American winters
Design conditions: Open, ventilated, drained—no water traps or enclosed cavities
Where S355J2WP is not the right choice:
Coastal zones with constant salt spray (patina can't keep up—switch to painted system)
Critical safety structures where K2's individual impact limits are contractually required
Fully enclosed spaces with no wet-dry cycling (patina doesn't stabilize in persistent dampness)
Real-world example.
A Dutch warehouse distributor switched from painted S235 to S355J2WP for their open-air storage rack frames. Three years later, the patina is stable. No recoating. No rust drip complaints. And the client reports lower facility maintenance than any painted structure on their site.
Design detail that matters most: Drainage, drainage, drainage. Slope horizontal surfaces 1–2%. Drill weep holes in closed sections. Keep soil and leaves off the steel. The material will do the rest.
