ASTM A588 Grade A steel is a high strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steel. It exhibits high atmospheric corrosion resistance resulting from a coating that develops on the metal after exposure to external conditions.

A588 Grade A low alloy steel plate is used for products that are exposed to the elements.  These include:Bridge plates,Gusset plates,Freight cars,Transmission and telecommunications towers,Housing and enclosures.

The atmospheric corrosion resistance of High strength ASTM A588 Grade A low alloy steel is substantially better than that of carbon steels such as A36 and A572-50 with or without copper addition. When properly exposed to the atmosphere, A588 is suitable for many applications in the unpainted condition.
